My Dog Won’t Sit.

And That’s Exactly Why They Photograph Beautifully.

One of the most common things I hear before a session at Bina Photography is:

“I would love portraits… but my dog won’t sit.”

And every time, I gently smile.

Because the dogs who “won’t sit” are often the ones who create the most expressive, personality-filled portraits.

The Myth of the Perfectly Still Dog

There is a common belief that dogs need to sit perfectly still, look directly at the camera, and behave like trained models in order to be photographed.

That simply isn’t true.

Dogs are naturally curious. They respond to new environments with energy, movement, and interest—especially in a studio filled with new sounds and scents. That doesn’t make them difficult to photograph. It makes them real.

And I don’t need long periods of stillness.

I need a moment.

A glance.
A head tilt.
A flick of attention.

That is where the portrait comes to life.

Guided, Never Forced

Dogs are incredibly intelligent. With calm guidance, patience, and positive reinforcement, they quickly begin to understand what we’re doing together.

They engage.
They respond.
They share pieces of their personality.

You don’t need a perfectly trained dog.
You don’t need them to sit on command every time.

That’s my role—to guide the process in a way that feels natural and comfortable for them.

If needed, a lead can be used briefly for safety or positioning. It is always removed during post-processing, so there will never be any visible sign of it in your final portraits. What remains is a clean, timeless image of your dog—exactly as they are.

Personality Over Perfection

The most meaningful portraits are not about perfection. They are about presence.

Some dogs are calm and observant.
Some are playful and curious.
Some are full of movement and energy.

And all of that is worth capturing.

It is always a joy to watch a dog settle into the experience, to see their personality unfold naturally, and to create images that reflect who they truly are—not who we try to make them be.
